SALOTE NASALO

BSc (UoF) | PgDip (USP)

  • I have always been fascinated by nature growing up. I love the sea, the trees, waterfalls and any chance I get to go outdoors, I would take it. I believe it was then as a little girl I developed my passion and love for nature. With the drastic challenges my homeland is currently facing on the impacts of climate change, as an indigenous Fijian, I know it is my duty as the custodian of my ‘vanua’ (land) to protect and defend my ‘vanua’ not only for my generation but for the next generations and many more generations to come.

Why Mangroves? My grandmother supported us growing up by special skills she developed over the years by catching crabs from the mangrove swamps and selling it on the roadside, choosing mangroves as my area of study is one way I could thank her for all that she has done and sacrificed bringing us up. Along with the benefits of mangroves, choosing to study mangroves comes with the sentimental value and protecting a source of livelihoods for coastal communities and villages.
